The Mercedes S-Class is a classification of luxury sedans produced by Mercedes. It was officially rolled out in 1972 with the W116 S-Class, which succeeded previous models that dated back to the fifties. The S-Class has been used to launch many of the company's most modern innovations such as drivetrain technologies and safety systems. The Mercedes S-Class is the world's best-selling luxury flagship sedan.
The W221 S-Class is sold in standard-wheelbase and long-wheelbase variants, with V6, V8, V12, hybrid and diesel powertrains being offered.
The name "S-Class" means "Sonderklasse" (special class) in its original German. In simple car terminology this effectively describes "a specially outfitted car".
Five generations of S-Class sedans have been manufactured by Mercedes. Past two-door S-Class coupe models were known as SEC and S-Coupe.
